LAUNCH OF THE RESEARCH FOUNDATION

The launch of the Pacific Health Research Foundation Trust on the 25th February 2011 was well supported by the Minister of Pacific Island Affairs, the Hon. Georgina Te Heuheu and various sectors of the Pacific and research community.

The Patron of the Foundation, Hon. Luamanuvao Winnie Laban, welcomed the dignitaries and supporters with a message that research in Pacific health was important to improving health outcomes and that she gives her full support to the aims of the Foundation especially in her new role as the Assistant Vice Chancellor (Pasifika) at Victoria University.

The Chair of the Foundation, Aiono Dr Alec Ekeroma, outlined the history and creation of the Foundation and the reasons why the Foundation was needed. “Increasing Pacific research capacity is fundamental for improving the health of Pacific people and that dedicated funding of research that is led or governed by Pacific researchers is an important part of the equation”. He mentioned that funding constraints marginalizes Pacific research as most if not all of the funding is diverted to established research institutions and researchers.

The Minister to Pacific Island Affairs acknowledged the vision of Pacific leaders in leading the new initiative and pledged her and the government’s support in making sure Pacific health research was supported. “The health of Pacific people is vital for a vibrant economy and I and the government fully endorse all endeavours that lead to that goal”.
